Does Living Well work?

What the research tells us ...

University of Montana Rural Institute on Disabilities research shows that Living Well participants experienced a 37% decrease in limitations due to secondary conditions.

A secondary condition occurs when a person with a disability develops a complication that further limits independence. Secondary conditions can be  psychological, like depression, as well as physical, like pressure sores.

Montana’s research also suggests that participation in the Living Well program is associated with a 10% decline in medical expenses:

  • Emergency room use was significantly lower

  • Hospital stays were significantly reduced

  • Out-patient and physician visits increased slightly

University of Iowa Center for Disabilities and Development research reports that after completing a Living Well Iowa program, the first 142 participants describe:

  • 5.8% improvement in overall health

  • Fewer limitations in walking, bending, climbing stairs, and moderate physical activity

  • Less fatigue

  • Less pain

  • Being able to accomplish more

  • Fewer secondary conditions

  • Significantly less doctor-identified depression

  • Fewer doctor-identified conditions like high blood pressure, fractures

  • Fewer hospital stays
